Where we come from
The Alternative Development Knowledge Network (ADKN) comes from The International Symposium on Sustainable Highland Development and Networking: Lessons Learned from the Royal Project, also called “The Highland Symposium”. This was a symposium organized by Thailand’s Royal Project Foundation, Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives and Chiang Mai University, with the objectives of sharing knowledge and information, presenting the result of 35 years of work by the Royal Project and initiating a new knowledge-sharing network.
The Highland Symposium was attended by organizations and individuals active in Thailand, Laos PDR, Myanmar, China, Vietnam, Malaysia, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Afghanistan, and Kenya, as well as representatives of major foundations, national development agencies and inter-governmental organizations. As a result of the symposium, international cooperation projects including training, international research and technical collaboration have been launched under the umbrella of “The Alternative Development Knowledge Network”.
Current collaborators in ADKN projects and initiatives include the Royal Project Foundation (Thailand), the Highland Research and Development Institute (Thailand), Chiang Mai University (Thailand), Kasetsert University (Thailand), HEIFER International (Thailand), the National Agriculture and Forestry Research Institute (Laos), the Yunnan Academy of Social Sciences (China), the Centre for Agricultural Research and Ecological Studies (Vietnam), Hue Agricultural University (Vietnam), the Ministry of Counter-Narcotics (Afghanistan), the Ministry of Agriculture (Afghanistan), the Afghan Development Association (Afghanistan), the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development (Afghanistan), the Rebuilding Agricultural Markets Project (Afghanistan), The Presidential Programme Against Illicit Crops (Colombia), the Inter-American Commission for Drug Abuse Control, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and the German Technical Cooperation Agency.
ADKN is facilitated by Thailand’s Highland Research and Development Institute.
